How I made my own HomePod stands

After my quest to find the perfect HomePod stands failed, I decided to give my Stereo Paired HomePods the stands they deserve. So I designed and manufactured them myself.

I’m sharing my story here so everyone who wants to do the same, can follow this simple guide.

Why build it myself?

After searching the web multiple times, I just didn’t find stands that fitted my needs. They needed to be high enough to reach above my sofa’s backrest, and preferable hide the HomePods’s power cable.

A little disclaimer before I start

Before you continue reading, you should know that I’m not a professional welder or handy man. So there may be better ways to do certain things. Feel free to leave tips in the comments. 😉

Step 1: Ordering the metal pieces

The design is simple, my stands would consist of a bottom plate, a pole and a top base to hold the HomePod.

My shopping list:

  1. A 280 mm by 280 mm steel plate that will serve as the bottom plate
Tip: Make sure your plates are at least 4 mm thick. Otherwise your plates might deform while welding them to the pole.
  2. A steel pipe with a diameter of at least 25 mm. The length is up to you to decide, mine are 1,1 meter long. (I used a square pipe.)
  3. A round plate with a diameter of about 80 mm. This will serve as the top platform.
  4. A table stand that has a conical shape, this will be glued on top of your stand to make sure the HomePod doesn’t fall off.
(I ordered mine on Amazon, but you can find lookalikes on other webshops too.)

Step 2: Drill the holes for the power cables

Drill a hole in both sides of the metal poles. These holes give your power cable a way into the pipe that will also serve as a cable tray.

Tip: To drill down in steel pipes, you better make sure you have the equipement necessary to do the job. The drills I used weren’t exactly high quality which made them glowing of heat.

Step 3: Preparations before welding

Make sure you mark the middle of your metal plates so you don’t have to worry about that while welding.

Step 4: Weld the stand

If you have welding equipement yourself, then you’re better equipped than me. I had to ask a friend to do the melding for me.

Step 5: Enjoy what you’ve accomplished for a moment

You’re halfway, time to enjoy your work for a minute! 🙃

Step 6: Glue on the top piece

This is a fairly simple step. Just glue on the conical top piece that will hold the HomePod steady and prevent is from falling off.

Step 7: Paint the stands

Before you start painting your stands, make sure the metal is clean. The paint will not hold very long if it’s still greasy. It’s also a good idea to remove the marker lines you’ve put on the metal before.

I used a universal primer first, to make sure the paint would adhere better to the stands.

Step 8: Attach felt pads

Attach felt pads to the bottom of your stands. This will not only protect your stands, it will also prevent your floor to scratch.

Step 9: Put the HomePods on the stands

First, you’ll need to detach the cable from your HomePods. You’ll have to use a little more force than what would feel comfortable, but they’ll come off.
This is at your own risk since Apple doesn’t recommend you disconnecting them from your HomePod. However, I removed them a few times before, so I guess it should be harmless.

After you detached your cable, you can but them inside your pole using the holes you drilled into them.

Next, connect your cable back to the speaker. Again, you’ll need to use some force here.

Step 10: This is it!

Having the HomePods standing at the same height while being placed more or less at equal distance from it’s audience really contributes to the amazing audio quality these devices deliver.
These 2 HomePods, configured as Stereo Pair, is by far ma favourite speaker setup.

I hope you enjoyed this article, let me know how your stands look!
